The Web-Based Mobile Application for Streamlining Pollution Prevention Activities in Coastal Zones and Fishery Harbors

Sri Lanka, an island uniquely positioned in the Indian Ocean, boasts an ocean area eight times larger than its landmass. The country has nearly 1,700 kilometers of coastline and diverse marine ecosystems, including mangroves connected to the ocean.

However, due to various human activities, coastal and ocean pollution is increasing day by day. An estimated 90% of ocean pollution originates from land-based activities. Waste is informally disposed of through rivers, canals, and drainage systems, eventually ending up in the ocean and on beaches. This escalating marine pollution severely impacts not only humans but also the health of flora and fauna in the marine environment. Additionally, pollution in the coastal zone adversely affects the tourism and fishing industries, both of which are vital to the national economy.

To address these challenges, an effective mechanism is essential to streamline pollution prevention efforts. The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has established 84 enforcement units in collaboration with municipal, urban, and provincial councils across coastal districts to implement pollution prevention initiatives in coastal areas and fishery harbors.

To enhance these efforts, MEPA has developed a comprehensive proposal, considering the perspectives of all stakeholders involved in waste management in coastal areas. To further its mission of protecting the marine environment and preventing pollution, MEPA is introducing an innovative web-based mobile application. This tool leverages modern technology to simplify and streamline pollution prevention activities.

Features of the Mobile Application:

Individuals and organizations can register for beach and fishery harbor clean-up programs. The app facilitates coordination between organizing groups and relevant government agencies.

The app provides information about ocean strainers installed at selected canals to control waste flow into coastal areas. It also details the canals and the respective agencies to contact, streamlining collaboration.

Specific beaches designated for clean-ups are outlined in the app. It offers opportunities for private sector organizations to manage and maintain these beaches on a contractual basis.

The app includes dedicated space for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to contribute to these initiatives.

MEPA is proud to partner with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, our trusted sustainability partner and sponsor, in bringing this project and the launch of the web-based app to life.
