Marine Environment Protection Authority

MEPA Academy

Sri Lanka’s marine territory, covering an area nearly eight times the size of its landmass, holds immense potential for economic development. Harnessing this potential sustainably requires a well-informed and skilled workforce across all marine-related sectors. Recognizing this critical need, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has established the MEPA Academy, a center dedicated to marine studies, skill development, and promoting the sustainable use of marine resources.

The sustainable use of marine resources depends on protecting the marine environment, conducting research, and enhancing the skills of marine professionals. While several institutions in Sri Lanka address marine-related education and training, there is a pressing need for a formal, centralized institute to support the nation’s aspirations for a thriving blue economy. To fill this gap, MEPA Academy was launched with the aim of fostering expertise and innovation in marine studies.

In collaboration with leading institutions such as the Centre for Environment Studies at the University of Peradeniya, the Ocean University of Sri Lanka, and the Mahapola Ports & Maritime Academy, MEPA Academy delivers recognized and impactful training programs tailored to the needs of various marine-related sectors.

The MEPA Academy seeks to:

  • Raise awareness about the importance of a pollution-free marine environment.
  • Develop skills among marine-related professionals for efficient resource utilization.
  • Expand research opportunities in marine sciences.

Through these initiatives, MEPA Academy strives to create a workforce capable of maximizing Sri Lanka’s marine resources sustainably while preserving the delicate marine ecosystem.

MEPA Academy caters to a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • Professionals in the fisheries, shipping, and tourism sectors.
  • Waste reception service providers, bowser drivers, and their assistants involved in ship-generated waste oil transportation.
  • Government officials, NGOs, and first responders to oil spills.
  • School and university students, fostering the next generation of marine conservationists.
MEPA Academy will measure its success through the number of workshops and training programs conducted, ensuring tangible progress in skill development and environmental stewardship. By equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable marine resource management, MEPA Academy is paving the way for Sri Lanka’s journey toward a prosperous blue economy.
